Roots of Development recently received a $15,000 donation from the Inter-American Development Bank.
The IDB recently held its annual meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank and the Inter-American Investment Corporation in Calgary, Canada. The IDB chose to support the work of GFDAG, the women’s group, which is a member group of APDAG, the larger community association Roots partners with on the island of La Gonave. This donation will provide approximately half of the funds needed for GFDAG’s 2011 micro-finance and business development initiative in Gran Sous. GFDAG plans to assist ti machann, or merchants, by building a structure that can store large quantities of goods that will be bought and shipped from mainland Haiti to La Gonave. In conjunction with the opening of the community store, GFDAG will also make small loans at 4% interest to local female community members who would like to begin selling products, but do not have enough start-up funds.
