Communications Center

Over 3.5 million Haitians live outside of Haiti.  We’re helping families stay in touch.

Type: Community Business
Objective: Create a social business, which creates jobs, provides a valuable service to local residents, and generates revenue for future projects.
Where: Gran Sous, La Gonave, Haiti
Beneficiaries: 2,500 residents
Cost: $6,000
Funding Partners:  Private Donors and CNC Software, Inc.

After construction on the community space finished, and solar panels were installed in January 2011, Roots installed a satellite dish to bring consistent high speed internet to Gran Sous.  APDAG immediately installed a phone, which local residents could use for a small fee to call family members in Haiti and abroad.  In August 2011, Roots’ Executive Director Chad Bissonnette delivered laptops for use in APDAG’s office and the communications center.  These laptops will not only ease communication between Gran Sous and Roots staff in the U.S., but also allow local residents and association members to build and improve their computer skills.
