Trucking Towards Independence in Haiti

Trucking Towards Independence in Haiti

This year, we are joining the #Giving Tuesday movement to raise money for a very exciting initiative for our Haitian community partner, APDAG.  This community group has an incredible opportunity to purchase a large GMC box truck that will serve as a critical step on their path to independence. This truck will significantly reduce costs for construction and development projects that they carry out on the island, including: clean water facilities, home-building projects, community centers and more. Just as exciting, this truck will allow the group bring in revenue on a regular basis (by providing paid services to residents and groups on the island) that will sustainably finance their development efforts and reduce their dependence on outside sources of funding. As an added benefit, this truck will make transportation and shipment of goods and inventory much more accessible to the women’s group, GFDAG, as they continue to grow their community business.

A purchase like this would typically incur significant costs to import, process through customs and ship from the mainland, but this truck is already on the island and was being sold for $15,000. APDAG spoke with the seller, and he agreed to reduce the cost to $12,000, recognizing the extra benefits it would provide to the community. We have had two incredibly generous institutional partners, Seven Hills Global Outreach, and The Rotary Club of Putnam, Connecticut commit to donating $5,000 to kick off this campaign. NOW is where all of you come in…we need to raise the difference to help APDAG buy this truck and we need the support of everyone we can reach. Visit to give to this important initiative and share with your friends, family, colleagues and your whole social network!

August 2013 Project Update

Roots of Development’s Executive Director, Chad W Bissonnette, presents their August 2013 project update. The update focuses on a new twelve month project Roots has begun, in partnership with a Haitian organization called CDECH, to help strengthen the capacity of Roots’ local community partner APDAG. A twelve month investment in capacity is a huge commitment, and a significant opportunity to see an incredible long-term impact. Greater capacity means greater independence! After all, Roots’ vision is for a world in which the very communities living in poverty are the ones leading the fight against it.

Hope you enjoy! And, please share this video with others and donate what you can to support this unique project. Thank you.
